“I’m bitterly disappointed that the Department of Education has made such a short-sighted and perverse decision. The Department really ought to promote its legal duty to provide education in conformity with the overwhelming wishes of the parents. I have regularly challenged the Minister Caitríona Ruane to provide additional integrated school places in North Down, because the demand for such places far exceeds availability. This is so particularly at primary school level.
As a consequence of this latest negative response by her Department to accede to a specific request by the parents for integrated status at Conlig Primary, I shall certainly be seeking further legal advice. I specifically need to establish the compatibility of the Department’s decision with current human rights legislation.”
